Massachusetts has a strong tradition of citizen activism. In the case of ovarian
cancer, personal, clinical or family experience with the disease has united the
membership of organizations in an effort to raise awareness of ovarian cancer,
fund health care research and educate lay and professional audiences about the deadliest
of gynecological cancers. These organizations are:
Massachusetts Division of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, Inc. (NOCC)
Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center
M. Patricia Cronin Foundation to Fight Ovarian Cancer, Inc.
Ovarian Cancer Education Awareness Network at Massachusetts General Hospital (OCEAN)
The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, Inc. Massachusetts Chapter (NOCC):
NOCC's mission is to raise awareness about ovarian cancer and promote education
about the disease. NOCC is committed to improving the overall survival rate and
quality of life for women with ovarian cancer. NOCC sponsors educational programs
for women and health care professionals, and distributes literature at health fairs,
community events, addresses women's clubs and organizations through its speaker's
bureau. NOCC is the leading ovarian cancer public information and education organization
in the United States. NOCC initiated the first toll free ovarian cancer information
line, maintains the most comprehensive Web site for ovarian cancer support in the
world and has built a network of state divisions across the United States. Each
year the NOCC sponsors the South Boston 5K Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian
Cancer, formerly called the Walk for the Whisper, at Marine Park, South Boston.

The M. Patricia Cronin Foundation to Fight Ovarian Cancer:
This foundation shares the mission to promote awareness and prevention of ovarian
cancer, with an emphasis on supporting women in treatment, their friends and families.
M. Patricia Cronin was diagnosed with Stage III ovarian cancer in 1996 and entered
a new treatment protocol at Dana Farber; she lost her battle with ovarian cancer
in August of 2000. At the time, there was only one support group in the region for
women with ovarian cancer, so she created her own network. Cronin's family and friends
created the Foundation to increase awareness of ovarian cancer, promote research
and support women and their families. The Foundation awards grants and recognition
awards each year to organizations whose work supports the Foundation's mission.
